Permissions

Staffd asks for 11 permissions when you add it. Six are needed to set up, four each power one moderation action, and one isn't used by any feature today. If a setup permission is missing, it tells you exactly which one and gives you a one-click fix.

Needed to set up

Without all six of these, it can't create its private channel, so it can't start.

  • View Channels: see your channels and the messages in them.
  • Send Messages: talk with you, answer members and post its cards.
  • Read Message History: read your rules and pinned messages, get to know your server, and follow the conversation when someone talks to it.
  • Embed Links: post its cards, like First impressions, flag cards and reports.
  • Manage Channels: create its private channel, and rename it when you hire it.
  • Manage Roles: set who can see its private channel. It doesn't read or change your server's roles.

These need to be on its role server-wide. Discord only lets an app grant a permission on a channel if it already holds that permission itself.

Optional: one action each

  • Manage Messages: the Delete message button on flag cards.
  • Moderate Members: timeouts, from the Timeout (1h) button or a timeout you ask for in the private channel.
  • Kick Members: kicks you ask for in the private channel and then confirm.
  • Ban Members: bans you ask for in the private channel and then confirm.

Missing some of these? It sets up normally, then tells you once in the private channel which actions it can't take, with a link to add them. It won't bring it up again. If someone clicks a button it can't carry out, it replies privately with the reason.

Manage Server is also on the invite, but no feature uses it today.

Role position matters too

Timeouts, kicks and bans also depend on where its role sits. It can't act on the server owner, on admins, or on anyone whose highest role is at or above its own. To let it act on more of your members, drag its role (Staffd) higher in Server Settings, Roles.

It sets its own nickname (the [Intern] tag, then its name) with Discord's Change Nickname permission, which most servers give everyone. If yours doesn't, the nickname won't update. Nothing else is affected.

Who can see the private channel

  • The server owner and anyone with the Administrator permission see it automatically.
  • Nobody else sees it unless you add them.
  • To add staff, open the channel's settings (Edit Channel, then Permissions), add a role or a member, and allow View Channel.
  • Anyone who can see the channel can use it: talk to it, confirm what it proposes (including kicks and bans) and click the buttons on flag cards. Moderation actions are recorded with who clicked.

If setup permissions are missing

If any setup permission was unticked, it can't set up. Instead of sitting there silently, it tells you:

  • It sends the server owner a DM that names the server, lists what's missing, and has an Add them here link. The link opens Discord's authorization screen for that server; approving it adds the missing permissions in place. Nothing is removed and you don't need to re-add it. The DM also gives the manual route: Server Settings, Roles, Staffd.
  • If your DMs are closed, it posts a short note in the server instead, in your system channel or a general-style channel, tagging only you.
  • If the DM went through but nothing is fixed after a while, it posts that public note once.
  • It doesn't nag beyond one DM and at most one public note.
  • Anyone who runs one of its slash commands while it's stuck gets a private reply listing what's missing, with the same link.

Once it's fixed

Fix it whichever way is easier: approve the link from the DM, turn the missing permissions on for its role in Server Settings, Roles, Staffd, or give it a role that has them. It usually notices within seconds and sets itself up as normal: private channel, greeting, First impressions card. See Getting started.

Then it closes the loop where it told you: a DM saying All set, with a link to its channel, and the public note, if it posted one, edited to Sorted.

Changing permissions later

  • To keep it out of a channel, deny its role View Channel there. It only watches and reads channels it can see. There's no separate setting for this.
  • To add an optional permission you skipped, use the link in its heads-up message, or turn it on for its role.
  • Keep the six setup permissions on its role. It needs them day to day, and to rebuild its private channel if that channel is ever lost.
